Twenty First Group Partners with Football Association of Wales to Shape the Future of the Cymru Premier
Twenty First Group (TFG) is proud to announce its collaboration with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) to design an optimal league structure for the Cymru Premier. This engagement is part of the FAW’s ambitious 2024-2030 strategy, which aims to elevate the league’s profile both domestically and internationally.
As part of this project, TFG conducted an in-depth evaluation of possible league formats to ensure that the Cymru Premier maximises Quality, Jeopardy and Connection and is poised for growth, competitiveness, and long-term success from the 2026/27 season onwards.
Commenting on the partnership, Jack Sharp FAW Head of Domestic Leagues, said:
“We were delighted to work with what we believe is the best Competition Intelligence company in the world, who provided independent analysis throughout the project and helped us shape the future of our League.”
FAW’s Key Objectives Include:
- Raising the profile of the Cymru Premier, including increased broadcast coverage
- Growing average match attendances
- Improving the standard of football to help clubs consistently reach the UEFA Conference League group stages
- Developing a stronger competitive balance within the league
- Increasing matchday, sponsorship, and broadcast revenues
After thorough analysis, TFG recommended a new 16-team split season structure for the Cymru Premier. This format includes:
- A double round-robin where 16 teams compete
- A mid-season split into three groups: Championship Race, European Challenger, and Survival Zone
- Teams play additional games post-split, with a total of 33-35 league matches for the season
- A relegation play-off and expanded European qualification play-offs to conclude the league
Why this Structure?
This structure was designed to address FAW’s core objectives, with a focus on:
- Fan Connection: By creating scarcity and delivering high-stakes matches throughout the season, fans are more likely to stay engaged from start to finish. The structure also increases geographical representation across Wales.
- Quality and Jeopardy: The format helps maintain a high level of competition, offering top teams better preparation for European qualifiers while providing additional development opportunities for emerging talent.
- Sustainable growth: With enhanced competitive dynamics and increased opportunities for matchday, sponsorship, and broadcast revenue growth, the new structure ensures long-term sustainability for Cymru Premier.
