Informing leagues as competitions compete for calendar space
Challenge
FIFA’s expansion of the men’s World Cup and Club World Cup threatened to undermine domestic leagues.
Solution
We developed a body of analysis that demonstrated the detrimental impact the expansion of these competitions would have on leagues.
This included historic analysis and forward modelling to understand the extent to which leagues would need to adapt or shrink their calendars, and the impact of player rotation and injury on the attractiveness of their products.

Impact
FIFA have abandoned plans for a biennial men’s World Cup, and face continued pressure from leagues to adapt their competitions to ensure that leagues are not adversely affected.
