The High Jeopardy Monopoly
Sport competes hard for fan attention in April. There’s The Masters, the IPL, UEFA Champions League quarters and semis and NBA playoffs. The World Snooker Championship, major cycling events and Grand National fight hard for their moment in the sun too. To earn a share of that attention, the ‘product’ must be compelling and marketed well. This weekend, the Premier League stands head and shoulders above the competition.
Our Jeopardy Index, which ranks this weekend’s matches in Europe’s biggest leagues by their stakes and uncertainty, places Premier League games in four of the top five spots. Both factors are heightened by the fact that the teams in these games (namely City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton and Liverpool) are competing for positions that they were not favourites for pre-season.
Such jeopardy is a rightsholder and broadcaster’s dream. We now wait to see the next set of stories emerge.
